This is the first military novel which reflects the Pacific War in a panoramic way. The story started from the General MacArthur’s failure in Philippines, and ended in  Spruance’s conquest of Okinawa. It described the attack of U.S. Army and Navy in Pacific theater as well as the desperate counterattack of Japan Army and Navy. The cruel wars in front-line, scant in food and clothes in home behind, the wits of all the generals, the life-and-death struggle of the soldiers, courage and wisdom of the allied forces and inflexibility and clumsiness of the Japanese forces are all reflected in this book.
